Antoinette Leonard is a Brooklyn native. She received her BFA from West Virginia University in 2003.
Antoinette works are oil on canvas. Antoinette subject is usually figurative with the addition of words either in the actual piece or in conjunction with the piece. Antoinette works comment on the relationship, stereotypes and feeling between a men and women. Her pieces are meant to be commentary on the so called “rules and regulations that have been programmed into the minds of genders. Her pieces are also a look into Antoinette’s inner demands and struggles with day-to-day life. More recently Antoinette has been exploring the use of color and geometric shapes to express feelings and struggles.
Antoinette uses the figure as the subject so that the viewer can relate to the struggle that she is trying to relay. Antoinette gets a lot of her inspiration from Frida Kahlo. Antoinette has a great appreciation for Frida work because her self-portraits weren’t just a picture but they were stories. Antoinette tries to achieve that through the incorporation of poems that are incorporated into her works. The poems are normally originals pieces by Antoinette. The addition of the poetry is to create a connection with all audiences this way no interpretation is needed the feelings are spelled out in the emotion that the image was created in.
