Bernie's art is self-taught, with the exception of a couple of life drawing classes in college and standard art classes in high school in the early 1970's. He always was drawing and coloring as a kid
Bernie began to “actually draw" something at age three. It was a big circle with 2 smaller circles drawn outside at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions. This was Mickey Mouse. Drawing and re-drawing Mickey hundreds of times, Bernie became aware of how lines and curves worked on paper and on his little chalkboard. He has always been drawing...first as a kid with crayons and later as a young adult with sketchbook in hand. Being mostly self-taught, Bernie has had only the standard art classes in high school and later, during the seventies, a couple of life drawing classes in college.
After a military enlistment, Bernie became much more serious about his artistic expression and subject choices. Whenever he could, he found the time and the drive to draw and paint. Satisfied with the human anatomy he had studied and reproduced on paper, he dove into creating more expression with color, and the effect it had on the picture. Working in acrylic paint, he began working in a monochromatic palette. Liking the outcome he was achieving with the quick drying paints, there was still a small battle being waged within his mind, as he loved watercolors too. He continued to learn by painting the many things he found in his surroundings, bouncing back and forth between each medium, and has never decided on just one in which to work. He has also, recently, begun using pastels and ink to widen his mediums.
His love for nature...birds, plants, flowers...and children, shows in his paintings. Many of his works emerge from a different point of view, idea or angle of the subject. This is what makes people stop and look at his work. This is what seems to be a drawing point in his paintings.
Bernie was a member of the Vancouver Artists' Guild, exhibiting work and winning many awards there, before moving with his wife and family to the Long Beach, Washington Peninsula in early 2007. Joining the Peninsula Arts Association (PAA), he has begun seriously competing in all of the group’s shows. Bernie loves attending the receptions held for each show and views them as a chance to meet the public one on one. He is an active member in many other ways as well - attending meetings, working on pre-show production and participating in social events.
Bernie has taken an early retirement due to diabetes and cancer and a progressing eye disease that will leave him blind in a few years.
He paints like a demon, sometimes. He usually will immerse himself in each and every painting he does.
Most importantly, HE STILL PAINTS, and tries to do something everyday because he knows someday he won’t be able to any more.
He is quite happy on the Long Beach Peninsula with his family, dogs, and his friends.
