West Indian Manatee
Manatees are gentle,aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. The average adult is about 9.8 ft long and weighs 800 to 1,200 pds. Boat collisions, ingestion of fish hooks, litter, and entanglement are problems the manatees face.In the United States they are protected under Federal Law by Marine Mammal Protection, Endangered Species Act
and in Florida by the Manatee Sanctuary
Act.
