I discovered I had the talent of drawing at a very young age. Of course I started drawing stick figures and the usual basic attempts as a child. Nevertheless, I got good comments on my drawings, and I was told they were special and even outstanding. Lucky for me, I also received a great deal of encouragement from my teachers and my family. That pushed me to continue drawing.
During my sophomore year in high school I met Stella Ramirez, my art teacher. She was instrumental in me becoming totally involved in art. I am so grateful to her for instilling in me a love for everything that has to do with art in all of its expressions. I was introduced to many different forms of it such as painting, ceramics, printmaking and sculpting. I continued to receive various recognitions for my work, both during my high school years and later in college.

Currently, I am working on Las Palmas the Club as the cultural and events coordinator, where I share my passion for art with our members.

If I were to explain my work, I would say that it is a reflection of ideas and inner feelings that I am able to express through the strokes of a pencil or a brush. I am happy I have the ability to be able to channel my energy and vision through something I love doing. Among my favorite subjects are trees, expressive naked eyes which I combine with my intrinsic beliefs, memories and experiences. Some of these themes are recurrent in my works and have defined my style. The eyes on my drawings represent for me a window into the human soul, but their significance should vary according to each person’s unique life experience. I believe that looking into someone’s eyes is as if looking into an endless well of emotions, struggles, ideas, and possibilities that make up that person’s character.

When I draw a tree I’m drawing life. I’m drawing growth. I draw the cycles of life, each branch representing a part of it. And as life, each branch has many different limbs of its own. Those limbs are the decisions that we have to make or good or even perhaps traumatic experiences as we sail through life. Sometimes, there are broken branches. They symbolize an area or a part of our existence that has come to an end. There is no more growth in that branch. That means we have either decided to stop a cycle or it has come to an end on its own.

Overall, as with most artists, my greatest reward when I finish a new piece is to cause a reaction on the viewer. If that happens, I know I have accomplished my goal.
