Biography of Lungelo Gumede

My name is Lungelo Gumede; I am the natural born artist from South Africa in the KwaZulu Natal Province. I am a proudly Durbanite residing at Clermont Township within the Durban boundaries. I did my first formal art training at the Bat Centre Residency Program in 2003 after matriculating at Mabayana high school in Ndwedwe, North of Durban.

I studied fine Art at the Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) and am presently enrolling at UNISA as a part time student towards my Degree in Visual Arts. Apart from studying, I am running community projects in local and international level. I am facilitating art workshops to young and upcoming artist at the Bat Centre.

I participate in the National program called Eager Artist where we teach Arts in schools. I am also a member of the Glocal Youth Parliament where we raise and discuss issues facing youth in our Countries. I represent the Youth of Durban in annual Conferences held in Rome 2004, Washington DC in 2005, and Turkey in 2006.

I was invited to NewZeland First ever Art in the Park Outdoor Exhibition along with Peatermaritzburg Artist Syabonga Skosana in May 2007.

Apart from community involvement, I run my own Company, (Lungelo Visual Arts & Design cc), where I facilitate arts projects, I do Monumental sculptures, bust on commission,I do portraits on commission, i paint wild life, african tribal expression and wood cut prints. I have completed portraits for World renowned personalities that I have met with locally and abroad. Oprah being one of them, Dr Nelson Mandela, Quincy Jones, Cardinal Napier, Engelina Jolie and and have recently met with Forest Withicker of the Last King of Scotland, when he was in Durban and i gave him the painting of himself wearing Zulu Traditional outfits which has opened doors for me to go and exhibit my work in Hollywood.

I had my first solo Exhibition in Morningside Durban and have exhibited in Gateway Durban, East Hampton New York, Le Port Island in Reunion;Greymouth NewZealand. My day to day work has been my nomination to as one of South Africa’s top 55 South African Artist by The Pietermaritzburg arts in the Park, and have been awarded with the Mayoral award of Excellent.

I believe that I get more inspiration by traveling the World and meeting with different world renowned artist and also visiting Worlds top Galleries and Museums.

The world is like a Book and those who don’t travel, reads only one page
