R.R. Cabarga
Originally from New York where my father worked as an artist, I spent hours after school everyday drawing until age ten when I went on tour with a theater group and performed as a stage actor for several years. In the early ‘70’s my family moved to San Francisco. There I played jazz and salsa on the trumpet for 15 years and worked part time as a graphic designer developing my art skills. Later I moved to LA and took a position as art director for a national ad agency. Now, at 47, I’m doing fine and commercial art full time freelance in the Los Angeles area. My paintings are often semi abstract, I’m also partial to surreal landscapes and anatomical studies. Occasionally I find still life moving but generally I’m not interested in painting things that actually exist.

Current Projects:

Hedrons:
My affinity for geometry, miniatures, optical illusions and actual reality resulted in the creation of “Hedrons. These are hollow 3-dimensional polyhedrons with individual oil paintings on each plane. Hedrons have an eye hole through which optical illusory internal spaces can be seen. This series was featured in my exhibit at the NOHO Gallery earlier this year.

Organic Abstractions:
Years of experimentation with paint and medium led to an amazing discovery. A method in which I allow the paint to flow freely in a very thin medium and precisely control temperature, timing and angles. No brushes or tools touch the paint which remains mostly unmixed. It's a fascinating process but the technique is not exacting and approximately one out of every ten attempts is successful. The paintings have a very organic, graceful quality with extremely minute details that cannot be achieved using traditional painting techniques.
