Artists Statement

I portray images from memory. These images of memory are motionless. They are not historic accounts or representations of something, but rather something that can be described by no other means than through an art image.

My life has been full of these images – very, very vivid images. Images I can not erase from my mind. Some are common everyday life, some are milestones, some are fears faced or realized, some are pure guilt, and some are shame. They seem to have no pattern other than being part of my life from which I have learned both good and bad.

Since I was a child I have been drawn to the images of others. I have sought out visual images as a means of educating myself about how I relate and fit into this world. I have been drawn in by the beautiful sculptural images of Rodin and the abstract and expressive images of Picasso. I have been inspired by these two. Picasso had much to say about everything, as do I, and Rodin stated his views eloquently with beautiful forms and surfaces. In my work, I attempt to combine Rodin’s beauty with Picasso’s brilliance.

The form and the surface are what arouse me. I like to work immediately in a medium that allows me to push and pull both. I take pleasure in feeling and shaping the form and surface with my hands, and I enjoy a medium that allows for personal contact. This direct touch is how I release my memories into my forms. I feel a deep need to expel what I have learned by sharing these images with others.

The process of creating these images allows for a better understanding of their meaning, and facilitates their release from my memory. My intention as an artist is to recreate these images from which I have learned, and use them to express my view of how the world can be made a better place with art. I believe art has changed me, and it has the power to change others.
