STATEMENT:
I use material found on the street, in popular ads, and reference books and catalogues. Thus, the process of expressing the quotidian becomes a way to reveal the creative potential that surrounds us, unnoticed, everyday. My work delivers an open-ended story to encourage the viewer to interact and develop conclusions which draw attention to their own learning, belief systems, and social environment. We are motivated and guided by a will to “consume” and “apply” (information), rather than to abstract knowledge; popular media solicits withdrawal from personal interpretation and meaningful introspection rather than encouraging people to be resourceful.
By exposing these popular influences, ideas, and common objects we encounter repeatedly everyday, I question the systems of media, images, and the status-quo as a ministry for uninspired consumption. My attempt is to inform the cognitive process by creating works of art which challenge the unchallenged perceptions of ideas and values all around us.
